Pattern

Leaves. Comes back. Writes about leaving. Comes back again.

The Scene

He doesn't show up to the wedding. She's standing in a dress in a library. Her friends watch her fall apart and then watch her answer the phone when he calls six months later.

The System

She grew up consuming a story about love that required suffering to be real. The harder it is, the more it must mean something. A relationship without friction doesn't generate copy. She needed material and she needed proof and she confused the two for a long time.

The Cost

The relationships that could have been steady get written off as boring. The chaos gets glamorized in print and repeated in real life. She builds a career on the pattern before she notices it's a pattern.

The Pivot

She goes back. The column writes itself. The reader recognizes the move before she does. She names it in 800 words and doesn't connect it to herself.

The Pull

You have a type. You know you have a type. You've explained it to your friends more than once in a way that made it sound reasonable.
