The Scene
Jay is losing an argument he started. Gloria has already solved it, fed someone, and redirected the conversation before he finishes his sentence. She watches him think he landed on the answer himself. She lets him.
The System
She came into a family where her role was defined before she arrived. Too much. Too loud. Too foreign. She learned to make herself useful in ways that couldn't be argued with. Warmth as a credential. Care as proof of belonging. The louder the accent, the harder the labor had to work.
The Cost
She carries information no one else is tracking. The family's emotional ledger runs through her. When she stops tracking, things fall apart. No one notices the infrastructure until it fails. Nobody built a backup system. Nobody thought they needed one.
The Pivot
The warmth stays. The management continues. The cost is invisible because she makes it invisible. That's the whole system. It doesn't break because she won't let it. There is no version of this family where Gloria stops holding it together.
The Pull
You have held more than your share for so long it stopped feeling like a choice. The people around you are fine. You made sure of that. Nobody asked what it costs you. You stopped expecting them to. You're still holding it.
